You know, when I was in college, I had this idea that if I told people my goals, they would help me achieve them. I thought that by sharing my dreams with others, I would gain support and encouragement. But what I didn’t realize at the time was that sharing your goals can actually make it harder to reach them.
There's a psychological phenomenon called "the goal gradient hypothesis," which suggests that people are more motivated to work toward a goal as they get closer to it. However, when you announce your goal to others, you may experience a false sense of accomplishment. This is because your brain starts to believe that you've already taken steps toward achieving it, even if you haven't.
For example, if you tell someone, “I’m going to start a business,” your brain might think, “Okay, I’ve already taken the first step — I’ve told someone.” That feeling of progress can reduce your motivation to actually do the hard work required to turn that dream into reality.
Moreover, when you share your goals, you open yourself up to criticism, comparison, and pressure. People might not always be supportive, and some might even try to undermine your efforts. They might say things like, “That’s not realistic” or “You’re not ready for that.”
So, what should you do instead? Keep your goals to yourself. Don’t feel the need to explain every detail of your plan to others. Focus on the action, not the announcement. Build your own internal motivation and stay committed to your vision without external validation.
In fact, some of the most successful people in history kept their goals private until they were achieved. They didn’t seek approval from others; they focused on execution. They understood that the real journey begins after the announcement — it’s the daily effort, the persistence, and the quiet determination that lead to success.
So, next time you're tempted to share your big dream, remember: keeping your goals to yourself isn’t about being secretive — it’s about protecting your focus, your energy, and your drive.
